Pushing hard for the title of “Best Walk of 2008″, yesterday’s hike from Glenridding with Rambling Pete was superb in all categories.
Although the weather started out a bit overcast with low cloud on the tops, it gradually cleared as we made our way along Striding Edge. The veil of cloud finally cleared as we left Helvellyn and we were left with an eye-wateringly clear view of the whole of the North West of England – and bits of Scotland too. We finished in bright sunshine after a great day out. Full report to follow in the Day Walks section.

As my walking career only started a few short years ago, so much of the country is still brand new to me and visiting legendary places like Striding Edge, after reading so much about it, is truly fabulous. The route was exciting and beautiful, about as much as I could ask for in a day out.
Glad you enjoy the blog Andrew.
Cheers, LW

Couldn’t agree more, this is a great route. I did the same ascent in May but was blessed with high cloud all day. Sadly it seems to be the fashion in walking forums to dismiss Striding Edge as nothing special, referring to other hairier and scarier ridges, which seems a facile point of view. Exposure is only one aspect of Helvellyn by Striding Edge, the sum of the parts make it a classic day-long adventure for the average hillwalker.
Good blog by the way.
